The uranium result looked chemically impossible

After Nazi racial laws forced Lise Meitner to flee Germany, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann continued experiments they had begun together. Bombarding uranium with neutrons seemed to produce barium, an element far lighter than uranium.

Hahn sent the baffling result to Meitner. During a winter visit with her nephew Otto Frisch, she treated the nucleus like a charged liquid drop that could stretch and divide.

Missing mass became enormous energy

The fragments’ masses add to slightly less than the original system. Einstein’s E=mc2E=mc^2 turns that small deficit into about 200 MeV per fission. Frisch named the process by analogy with biological division.

Hahn received the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry; Meitner’s exclusion remains one of the prize’s most discussed failures.

The scientific insight itself crossed borders that politics had violently imposed. An experimental anomaly in Berlin, a letter to exile, and a calculation in Swedish snow together revealed how a nucleus could split.
