Medieval inquiry

  1. Philoponus Refused to Let Air Push the Arrow An arrow kept flying after it left the string. Philoponus moved the cause of that motion from the air back into the arrow.
  2. Ibn Sahl Gathered Sunlight into a Point To draw a lens that would truly focus light, Ibn Sahl found the hidden ratio between the angles of refraction.
  3. The Lamp Before the Mirror A lamp, a mirror, and repeatedly measured angles turned optics from an argument with authority into an experiment that could be done again.
  4. The Stone the Air Did Not Have to Push Buridan gave a thrown stone something carried within its motion, loosening an old explanation before inertia existed.

  1. The Earth Became a Wanderer Copernicus moved Earth out of the still center and discovered how much physics changes when the frame changes.
